Oak Island local hosts ocean safety event in honor of shark attack survivors
OAK ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — On June 14, 2015, two sharks attacks happened within an hour and a mile of each other at Oak island. A little over a year later, an Oak Island local is honoring the two survivors.
Mike Young has organized an event for Saturday, June 25, called The Yow-Treschl Ocean Safety Day.
Emergency responders, local surfing instructors and volunteers will be on site to teach the basics of first aid and dealing with ocean hazards like rip currents.
The event is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the SE 16th Street beach access, just east of Ocean Crest Pier.
