Oak Island mobi-mat replaced after original damaged by vehicles on beach

OAK ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — The Town of Oak Island says a Mobility Assistance Mat (Mobi-Mat) damaged by vehicles driving illegally on the beach has been replaced.
It happened in the Beach Access Location at SE 40th Street when a truck, a car, and a golf cart drove on the beach overnight on July 28 and got stuck.
The Town says the Public Works Department was able to source an immediate replacement, which has since been successfully installed, allowing the access to be returned to service.
The Town is continuing to pursue damage and replacement compensation by the drivers of the multiple vehicles which led to the Mobi-Mat’s destruction.
