Oak Island postpones planned beach closure ahead of nourishment project

OAK ISLAND, NC (WWAY-TV) – Oak Island is postponing it’s planned beach closure until Sunday.

The beach access on SE 49th Street was set to close today in preparation for the island’s beach nourishment project.

The town said crews were delayed in getting some supplies and equipment. Oak Island Communication Officer, Mike Emory said the project could face more delays on it’s based on weather conditions.

“It’s very important to watch the daily updates on the project because the time tables may change what may be scheduled for one day might get moved or shifted down or possibly up a day or so,” Emory said.

The beach nourishment will include survey’s before and after dredging. Crews will spread more than 1.6 million cubic yards of new sand on all of the town’s beach areas from McGlamery Street to the point. Work begins on Nov. 20.
