Oak Island residents start fundraiser for shark attack victims

OAK ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — Residents of Oak Island and neighboring communities are coming together to help the victims of Sunday’s shark attacks.

Dawn Batykefer said she decided to start a fundraiser for Hunter Treschl and Kiersten Yow to assist with expenses associated with the incidents. Batykefer said the idea started as a Facebook post and has now turned into a fundraising website and drop off location at a bank in the area.

“These people come here to help our community,” Batykefer said. “This is such a tragic thing to happen. Hopefully this will help them.”

Batykefer has lived in the area since the early 2000s. She said she plans to pass out fliers on Saturday to help raise more awareness.

Donations can be dropped off at the Coldwell Banker Sea Coast Advantage at 4911 Long Beach Road. The Wells Fargo Bank is handling the account as well. Donations can be made at any location in the area made to “Help Kiersten and Hunter.”
