Oak Island VFW holds Memorial Day tradition
OAK ISLAND, NC (WWAY)– The VFW in Oak Island held an annual Memorial Day service to honor men and women who died serving in the US military.
Dozens of people came out to one of the only ceremonies on Oak Island and this VFW has been doing it since the 70’s.
The Oak Island VFW post commander Michael Abbott says whether he’s speaking or in the audience, these ceremonies are always touching.
“The honor sends chills down my spine every time I get ready to do one,” Abbott said. “Even the guys who are getting on up there who should not stand, will stand-they’re just that dedicated.”
This VFW has existed since 1974 and has contributed money to veterans as well as to the community.
On June 14th, Abbott says they will also have a ceremony to rename one of the halls in their building.
