LELAND, NC (WWAY) — A major roadway improvement project along U.S. Highway 17 in Leland is nearing completion, with officials saying key portions could reopen as early as May.

The Ocean Gate reconstruction project, located in the heart of the town’s busy commercial district, is focused on improving safety and accessibility for both drivers and pedestrians.

Project manager Christie Schreckengost with the Town of Leland said the area has seen a surge in foot traffic due to nearby businesses, apartments and ongoing development.

“With more people walking in the area—whether they don’t have vehicles or are parking nearby and crossing—the pedestrian improvements will increase overall safety for everybody,” Schreckengost said.

Officials say Ocean Gate Plaza along U.S. 17 is expected to reopen in May, with final construction details wrapped up by June.
