Officials look for escaped inmate who left work assignment

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (AP) – North Carolina corrections officials are searching for an inmate who walked off from a work assignment in Elizabeth City.

A statement from the Department of Public Safety said 22-year-old Kyle Austin walked away shortly after 3 p.m. Tuesday from an assignment at the Elizabeth City maintenance garage.

Authorities say Austin was serving a one- to two-year sentence for drug sales and was scheduled for release in April Officials say he is from Kill Devil Hills and may attempt to travel to Dare County.
