Officials report nearly 20 water rescues in New Hanover County over the weekend
NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Despite several red flag warnings at beaches locally – dozens of people have been rescued this weekend.
Red flags were flying at Carolina Beach until Saturday. On Sunday the risk was lowered to a yellow flag warning meaning moderate surf conditions, although life threatening rip currents can still be present.
Despite those red flag warnings, many beach goers still went into the water. According to the National Weather Service, over the weekend lifeguards reported a total of 18 water rescues in New Hanover County.
The number of water rescues for each beach are listed below:
- 6 in Wrightsville Beach
- 10 in Carolina Beach
- 2 in Kure Beach.
