One dead after driver runs down 5 pedestrians in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — One person is dead after an altercation led to a hit-and-run that injured five people in San Francisco Wednesday afternoon, according to the San Francisco Police Department.

Authorities say the incident happened around 10:24 a.m. near Illinois and 24th Street.

A spokesman for San Francisco General Hospital says one of five people struck has died.

Witnesses at the scene say a man driving a white van got into an argument with pedestrians and started swinging an ax.

One of the pedestrians took out a belt and they got into a scuffle, according to the witness.

The man with the hatchet got back into the van then ran down the pedestrians.

The victims, all men, were transported to a local hospital where one of them later died.

Three of them are in critical condition.
