One person killed in early morning fire in Calabash

CALABASH, NC (WWAY) — One person died in an early morning fire in Brunswick County.

The fire broke out just before 6:00 am Monday at a single-story home in the 8300 block of Ocean Highway West in Calabash.

When firefighters from the Calabash Fire Department arrived, they found the home fully engulfed in flames. Reports indicated that a resident was trapped inside. Three firefighters entered the room where the victim was found but were forced to retreat due to heavy flames.

One firefighter sustained minor burns and was treated at the scene. The victim and a dog did not survive.

The fire was brought under control with help from multiple agencies, including the Sunset Beach, Ocean Isle, Horry County, Grissettown Longwood, and Waccamaw fire departments.

Additional support came from the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, Brunswick County EMS, and the Calabash Fire Department Auxiliary Prolonged Incident Response Team.

The Brunswick County Fire Marshal’s Office, Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, and North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation are conducting a joint investigation into the fire. As of Monday morning, the cause of the fire remained undetermined
