ONLY ON 3: Memory Lane puts the comics in stand-up comedy
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Stand-up comics performing in front of comic books? Well it happens in Wilmington and Saturday you can be there. Memory Lane is putting the comics in stand-up comedy.
“We just love stand-up comedy, and we have a comic book store, and the 2 things just seem to go hand in hand,” said Jacob Motsinger, co-owner of Memory Lane.
Once a month the store transforms into a comedy club after hours.
“We shut down at our regular time and then like in a scramble move everything out of the middle of the store and put up a ton of chairs,” said Motsinger. “It’s more unique than anything else because people really just come here to laugh.”
And that is precisely what Stand-Up Night is all about.
“They’re typically not on dates, they’re not going out to impress people, they’re not dressed up. They’re just kinda coming out to have a good time and laugh at some people for a little while,” Motsinger said of the crowd.
So is the humor all about super heroes and science fiction?
“It only really gets nerdy humor because it’s such a weird space that sometimes the comedians get up there and start talking about where their physically at,” Motsinger said.
But you don’t have to be a Dungeon Master or a Whovian to have a good time.
“It’s a lot of local comedians kind of testing new material and checking things out in a place that’s so unique and that they can get good feedback from other comedians and people they talk to after the show,” said Motsinger.
It’s a one stop shop for 2 kinds of comics. The show is free and starts at 9:00 p.m. Saturday at Memory Lane. This month’s comic is Cordero Wilson, the 2015 winner of Port City’s Top Comic.
