Onslow County officials concerned over rise in suicide deaths
ONSLOW COUNTY (WWAY) — A recent rise in suicide deaths in Onslow County has the Sheriff’s Office concerned.
New data shows a recent increase in suicide deaths and attempts across the county.
In 2024, the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office responded to 23 suicide deaths while emergency services handled 64 suicide-related calls.
In 2025, those figures rose to 28 deaths and 76 related calls.
Officials say the spike spans all demographics, including veterans, young and old, and those facing mental health challenges.
Sheriff Chris Thomas says he has seen the trend firsthand and says resources to address the growing mental health needs are stretched thin.
“It just appears to be increasing to me, and I am convinced that it is also connected to the lack of facilities, the lack of mental health treatment programs within the State, you know, lack of resources basically,” said Thomas.
The increase has prompted the Sheriff’s Office to release a public statement emphasizing that support services are available.
If you, or someone you know, is struggling, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
