NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Controlled burns are continuing in parts of New Hanover County.

Orton is burning 907 acres between 10:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. on Monday as part of its management plan to improve forest health and restore longleaf pine habitat.

This is part of their plan to conduct controlled burns on 6,000 acres through May 1st.

Orton says their annual prescribed fire regimen, together with the efforts of local partners, plays a significant role in a larger, range-wide public-private effort to build resilience in this special habitat.
