Orton Plantation burning nearly 900 acres

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — If you see or smell smoke today it might be from a prescribed burn in Brunswick County.

Orton Plantation is conducting controlled burning on 866 acres Thursday as part of its management plan to improve forest health and restore longleaf pine habitat.

Orton Plantation says they have experienced local fire and safety professionals on site at all times.

The annual control burn season for the plantation lasts until May 1.
