Palms planted to cover downtown corner ‘eyesore’

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — In Downtown Wilmington, one corner is looking very different today thanks to 24 new palm trees.

The president of Residents of Old Wilmington says members spent the day restoring and planting the trees to cover a corner they call an eyesore. The trees now sit at the corner of 2nd and Chestnut, where the post office is located.

Joe Pawlik said after years of thought, he finally decided to reach out to the president of ROW about the idea.

“Every time I would go to the post office I would pass through this drive through and think, ‘What an ugly corner,'” Pawlik said.  “So, I contacted Sylvia actually just a matter of two months ago and said you know, ‘What do you think about raising money to palms in?'”

The planned on doing the project in 2016 but Pawlik said they got enough support from the community and post office to complete the $7,000 project.
