Parent: Brunswick County bus driver involved in crash had history of bad driving
BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) – New scrutiny has come out days after a school bus driver was cited for a crash that injured dozens of Brunswick County students.
The crash causing a chain reaction hitting another bus Friday.
One family in Supply tells me they have complained almost ten times in the last two years about the bus driver.
“A lot of parents are mad,” said Tiffany Anderson who has a son that is a 2nd grader. “They’re not happy and if they let Mr. Cary drive that bus, these kids are not going to be getting on it probably.”
Tiffany Anderson says she did not let her son on the bus Monday morning. After she claims she saw Cary Felton behind the wheel just days after he was cited by highway patrol for causing Friday’s crash involving another bus and pickup truck.
“If so many people have complained about him, then why hasn’t something been done,” asked Anderson.
Anderson says she’s complained at least five times since the year started. The boiling point was when she says several kids were dropped off but not her son.
“He’s taken off twice with my kid out of the neighborhood without realizing that he was on the bus,” Anderson said.
We went to Felton’s home to get his side of the story. His family did not want to talk because he is still recovering, from a hand injury, but they did tell me that what happened was an accident.
An accident the Brunswick County school district is investigating.
“We’re looking at all information that’s coming from the traffic reports, coming from the employee,” said Brunswick County schools spokesperson Jessica Swencki. “It just basically is a full review of all of the information that we have available to us.”
The school district could not comment or confirm the Anderson’s family complaints. They did say that they take concerns from parents seriously.
Anderson says she has never heard back from the school on any of her numerous complaints.
If nothing changes from this incident, she will look for a new way for her son to go to school.
“If they let him drive that bus after the investigation my kid’s not getting on it,” said Anderson.
Felton has worked as a bus driver for the school district dating back to 2015. Highway patrol says that Felton was distracted by students on the bus. He is now on paid administrative leave.
