Parents ‘plea’ to Brunswick Co. school leaders to assure safe water
BOLIVIA, NC (WWAY) — Parents talked to Brunswick County school leaders in a plea to assure safe drinking water for their children.
The school board meeting was held Tuesday afternoon. This was the first time several groups and parents concerned with GenX and other chemical compounds spoke to school leaders about safe drinking water for students.
Last week, Brunswick County leaders called out rumors that told the public the school district told staff and administrators to not talk about water quality.
Parents of students and those who volunteer in the system spoke in the hearing asking the board do more to provide other water options.
Several pushed for specific action to partner with the water utility H2Go and look at implementing reverse osmosis water treatment.
“We are asking for choice as parents,” Emily Donovan, Clean Cape Fear and mother of student, said. “No parent should have to worry about what water their children are drinking at school. No student should have to worry if the water they are drinking at school will give them cancer.”
The school board was set to meet with county leaders last week about water quality concerns.
