Parking problems raise student concerns at Hoggard High

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — This school year some high schoolers in New Hanover County are searching for new ways to get to class after hundreds of parking spaces were cut from campus due to construction.

About 200 spots at Hoggard and 100 over at Laney are no longer available to student drivers.

Today students we spoke with said they are looking for new ways to get to school each day. Only upper classmen were able to get one of the limited spots on campus and some were unable to do even that.

“I think it’s pretty unnecessary. I mean, I don’t think they needed a whole other construction area, and if they did they should have gotten more parking spaces,” said Hoggard senior Cameron Chaney.

“Yeah I mean it’s dangerous crossing the road to get to McDonald’s it’s a risk, it’s a real life or death situation,” said junior Keehlan Brown.

Students said some are parking at the shopping center across the street and then running across the four lane highway to the school, others are parking at friends and families homes and then walking to school.
