NEW DETAILS: One killed in crash involving Brunswick County deputy

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — The North Carolina Highway Patrol has confirmed that one person was killed in a crash early Tuesday morning in Leland.

It happened around 6:00 am on US 17 at the Ploof Road intersection.

According to the NCHP,  a Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office vehicle was traveling north on U.S. 17 with blue lights and siren activated, when a 2017 Hyundai driven by Cora Cartrette, 45, turned left from US 17 onto Ploof Rd.

The deputy, identified as Nathan Kye, 38, was responding to assist another Brunswick County sheriff’s deputy when he failed to stop for the red light and hit Cartrette’s car.

Kye ran off the road to the right and ended up on the shoulder. Cartrette’s car ran off the road to the left and struck a utility pole before coming to rest on the shoulder.

Kye was take to the hospital. Cartrette was pronounced dead at the scene.

The highway patrol says the investigation is ongoing but once finalized, will be presented to the district attorney’s office for consultation.
