Patriot Power Company employee charged with DWI

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – Early Friday morning Wilmington Police were dispatched to a traffic accident involving a Patriot Power Company truck.

WPD spokeswoman Cathryn Lindsay says that the driver, Shawn McCartney, had hit a parked vehicle, three signs and the wall and fence at the Latimer House near 3rd and Orange street.

Officials say that the man showed signs of impairment and refused to take a breath test.

After a search warrant was obtained for his blood test, officials say he was charged with Commercial DWI and Failure to Maintain Lane.

As for the damage at the Latimer House, the more than one hundred and fifty year old fence and a historical marker were damaged in the accident.

Lower Cape Fear Historical Society President Tom Crittenden tells us this the fourth time the marker has been knocked down and that something needs to change.

“The City of Wilmington needs to slow the motorists down coming up and down Third Street. It’s very very common for a vehicle to come down Third Street and knock out seven mirrors on vehicles parked besides.” Crittenden said.

Crittenden says that when he arrived at the scene after the crash he found the marker on the opposite side of the street. He doesn’t know when but he says that the damaged property should be replaced by the city at some point.
