Patrol charges wrong-way motorists in fatal wreck on I-85
RALEIGH, NC (AP) — The N.C. Highway Patrol has filed multiple charges after a head-on collision on Interstate 85 that killed three people.
Lt. Jeff Gordon said Monday that 20-year-old Chandler Michael Kania of Asheboro faces several charges, including driving while impaired, careless and reckless driving and possession of alcohol by a person under the age of 21.
The patrol said the Jeep Kania was driving Sunday was traveling north in the southbound lanes of I-85 in Hillsborough when it hit a car with four people inside.
Killed were 49-year-old Felicia Harris of Charlotte, 46-year-old Darlene McGee of Charlotte and 6-year-old Janiece Smith of Brooklyn, New York.
Kania, who was taken to the University of North Carolina Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, is identified by multiple media outlets as a student at UNC-Chapel Hill.
