PCFC women claim division title with two games remaining

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) — The Port City FC women’s team has made quick work of their common opponents this season.
The Gulls clinched the Atlantic Conference-Carolina’s Division title on Saturday following a win over the Carolina F-C Swarm. This earns them a spot in the national playoffs. PCFC remains undefeated and is currently ranked 6th out of 200 WPSL teams.
While the team has two regular season games remaining and the outcome of them has little impact going forward, outside back Alex Tsumas says they still have a lot to play for.
“I think we just have to go in it with the same mindset,” Tsumas said. “Other teams are still going to want to say that they beat us. So we’re going to come out strong. We already have the championship, but we can’t really think of that. Just got to keep playing hard and preparing for the next level.”
Tsumas is referring to the team’s upcoming promotion to the USL W League in 2026, which was announced before the season started. Another promotion beyond that, and PCFC will be considered a professional soccer team. PCFC has only been around for two years.
While their accomplishments this year pale in comparison to the franchise’s future goals, goalkeeper Morgan Hobbs feels playing strong now can keep their momentum alive.
“It matters to us when we come out here every day and we train,” Hobbs said. “It matters to us because we’re all working towards having a great college season this fall with our respective college teams. We’re working to compete. Build the Port City name here in Wilmington and in New Hanover County so that we can get on an even bigger stage next year. This is just building blocks to be able to compete in a better conference next year.”
The men have three regular season games remaining and need one point in the standings to qualify for the playoffs. This after a winless season in 2024.
