Peaceful protesters pray for Planned Parenthood

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — This morning dozens gathered on the corner of S. 17th Street in Wilmington to peacefully protest the Wilmington Planned Parenthood facility.

Those gathered said they are hoping to start a conversation about Planned Parenthood across the country, in light of videos recently released by the Center for Medical Progress, in which Planned Parenthood leaders discuss selling fetal remains. Organizers said they want to talk with people about other options for healthcare and birth control other than Planned Parenthood.

We reached out to Planned Parenthood for response to the protests.

“These protests are intended to shame the patients who seek basic health care services from Planned Parenthood and to intimidate the health care professionals who work here. Women should be able to access health care without fear of violence, harassment, or intimidation,” the organization said in an e-mailed statement. “We are here for our patients, no matter what. For the women, men, and young people we serve, the care we provide isn’t about politics – it’s about their well-being, and we remain focused on ensuring our patients are able to access the health care we provide in a safe and caring environment.”

Planned Parenthood says it provides care for more than 25,000 women, men and teens in North Carolina each year.

The protest is part of a national day of protest against Planned Parenthood.
