Peaceful protests planned for Donald Trump’s rally in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Several groups are planning peaceful protests during Donald Trump’s rally in Wilmington Tuesday. While some oppose Trump, others say they are also standing up to the hate speech surrounding this election.

“I don’t think he’s suited to lead as President,” Wilmington attorney Mark Williams said.

That is why Williams will be standing outside Donald Trump’s rally in Wilmington protesting.

“Peacefully holding a sign in opposition to Donald Trump,” Williams said.

Williams said he is not opposed to Trump’s visit to the Port City.

“It’s nice that Wilmington is important in presidential politics,” Williams said.

While Trump may be putting Wilmington on the political map, Williams said he will not be putting Trump on his ballot.

“He might have been a good business man, but when he makes comments like, ‘We have nuclear weapons. Why don’t we use them?’ that scares the heck out of me,” Williams said.

Williams plans to protest on his own, but Carter Jewell is also organizing another peaceful protest.

“It’s no longer fact versus fact, opinion versus opinion,” Jewell said. “It’s hate.”

Jewell said she is protesting the hate speech.

“That’s what started it is seeing all these people in my hometown just using profane language saying terrible things about, ‘Hillary is a woman,'” Jewell said. “‘We need to get all the Muslims out, get all the Mexicans out.’ Just racist, sexist, homophobic, terrible things.”

That is why she said she is organizing Facebook groups to stand peacefully against Trump.

“We are just going to stand outside and show that there are a lot of people here that disagree with him and don’t want him here,” Jewell said.

Meanwhile, Williams hopes Trump’s visit inspires another visit.

“My hope is that Hillary Clinton will come as well,” Williams said.

Williams said he is getting a permit through the Wilmington Police Department to protest on College Road. Jewell said they are working on being on UNCW’s campus through a student organization.
