Pender, Laney boys basketball teams disqualified from competing in state playoffs

BURGAW, NC (WWAY) — Pender and Laney High School boys basketball teams will not be allowed to participate in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state playoffs.

The ruling came down from the NCHSAA yesterday after Pender and Laney were involved in a fight that turned into a bench-clearing incident back on December 7 at a game held in Burgaw. Laney Athletic Director Fred Lynch and Pender Athletic Director Matt Davis confirmed to WWAY that both teams will have to sit out of the playoffs.

In the NCHSAA handbook it states “individuals coming onto the play area during a fight” carries a $1,000 fine. In a phone interview, both AD’s confirmed that they will be getting fined by the state.

Laney and Pender both sent in appeals on the decision, but were notified they had been denied.
