Pender Co. EMS prepares shelters for possible evacuations

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Pender County EMS officials are preparing shelters for the possibility of evacuations as they continue watching Hurricane Matthew.

EMS Director Tom Collins said they are preparing for the worst and will be ready regardless of where Hurricane Matthew goes.

He said they are ordering extra cots and filling their trailers to send to shelters throughout the county.
Collins said they will prepare for evacuations and get people out of the way before the storm arrives.
No matter what, Collins said there are things everyone should be doing now to prepare.

“Like putting up lawn furniture, stuff that could become projectiles and can cause damage to other homes or to your residence,” Collins said. “It’s time to start putting things up. If you don’t have provisions, you need to be able to sustain for a couple of days, have enough water.”

Collins said they are prepared for anything.

“If the storm does not make landfall, we could still experience gale force winds, coastal flooding, down trees and power outages,” Collins said. “The coastal towns of Surf City and Topsail Beach could possibly have flooding, breaches and over-wash later this week.”

Collins said they will be posting evacuations and public announcements on the County website and through social media.
