Pender Co. families evacuated as river rises, NC 210 bridges underwater

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Pender County EMS and Fire are evacuating families near Currie as the rivers continue to rise.

David Stancil with Pender Co. EMS and Fire said they are concerned the bridge on NC 210 near Still Bluff is going to be washed out.

A good Samaritan showed up this morning to the staging area off NC 210 with an amphibious boat with wheels to help in any way he could. The man and rescue crews with the Coast Guard took off from a bridge on 210 to get families stuck on the other side.

Brian Mott said the water started coming into his house yesterday. He said they started moving everything up to the second floor including his bulldog and dachshund. He said they left the house after that. Mott said when they tried to go back to the house later last night, the bridge was underwater.

Mott said they are hoping a crew can get their dogs, but they know people are the priority right now.

Twayna Brown said she has never seen this much water in their area before. She left her house on Saturday and has not been back since.

“I’m not really worried too much,” Brown said. “As far as material things, you can replace, but you can’t replace a life, so I just thank God that my family and me, myself is okay.”

Rescue crews have not returned on the boat at this point yet.
Stancil said S.A.B.L.E. is helping with rescues today.
