Pender Co. hit hard by winter storm

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Folks got the brunt of the snow in Pender County but as that snow turned to rain it turned into a slushy mess on the roads there.

DOT plows were on the roads all afternoon and traffic has been moving right along for the most part. Pender County Emergency Management say they dealt with a number of traffic accidents early in the day but things calmed down by late afternoon. They expected though, the calls would pick up as the refreeze began.

In Burgaw there weren’t a whole lot of folks out and about Downtown. In fact one of the only business open downtown there was a coffee shop and they were fairly busy.

The owner told WWAY as nice as it was to look at they were ready for this nasty messy part to just be done with.

“It’s very beautiful, but unfortunately when you look out there not it is raining and the slushy roads are going to turn to ice. So we do need to be very careful,” said Donna Best-Klingel, owner of Brown Dog Coffee Company.

She said they had opened only to serve those who had to work today, not to encourage folks to get out and about. In fact “Brown Dog Coffee Company,” closed early today, just to be on the safe side.
