Pender Co. summer camp teaches more than academics

BURGAW, NC (WWAY) — Learning to tie a tie, shake hands and dress for a job. Those aren’t your typical camp activities, but the Summer Camp Respect Program isn’t your typical camp.

For four weeks Pender County’s rising 6th, 7th and 8th graders learn lifelong skills.

The program includes field trips, mock trials and guest speakers.

The goal is to teach kids to be leaders rather than followers.

Instructors want students to stand up to bullies and know the importance of respect.

“If you want respect you’ve got to treat others with respect and they’ll respect you,” said 11-year-old camper, Ava Bonner.

Other lessons include social media etiquette, never texting while driving and staying away from drugs and alcohol.

Pender County’s District Attorney’s Office and Community in Schools is behind the free camp.
