Pender County commission showing support towards area hog farmers

BURGAW, NC (WWAY) – A unanimous sign of support coming from Pender County commissioners to local farmers facing nuisance lawsuits.

The county commission approved a resolution supporting the multiple hog farms across the county.

The resolution also is their showing of support in the latest state Farm Act that the General Assembly enacted after overriding the Governor’s veto. Lawmakers say it will work to keep hog farmers locally from being hit with nuisance lawsuits like the recent ones against Smithfield farms subsidiary farms in Duplin and Bladen counties.

Two Pender County farms are going to trial in similar cases according to the county Agriculture Extension office.

The most recent statistics from the USDA show Pender County is one of the top ten counties in hog production in the state.
