Child thrown from car in crash involving Pender deputy
BURGAW, NC (WWAY) — A deputy with the Pender County Sheriff’s Office was injured while responding to a burglary call in Burgaw late Thursday night.
The crash occurred at the intersection of McCullen and Wilmington streets around 11:15 p.m.
Capt. James Rowell with the sheriff’s office said Deputy Paul Horchler was responding to a call and had the vehicle’s blue lights and siren activated. Rowell said a car pulled out in front of the deputy’s vehicle.
According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, the deputy was struck by a 2001 Honda Civic.
The deputy sustained minor injuries and was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
Three people inside the Honda Civic were also transported to NHRMC. Rowell said a boy, approximately 5 years old, was not properly secured inside the vehicle and was thrown from the vehicle. The child’s injuries were not life threatening.
The Highway Patrol is investigating the crash and charges are likely to be filed against the Honda driver.
