Pender County man accused in the death of his sister awaits extradition in Ohio

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — WWAY is learning more about a Hampstead man the Pender County Sheriff’s Office accused of murdering his sister. 

23-year-old Matthew Dolan is being held in connection with the death of his 21-year-old sister, Megan Dolan. 

Her body was found by firefighters at their family home in Hampstead on Sunday. Investigators believe Megan died before the fire began.  

Matthew then fled to Chardon, Ohio. The Geauga County Sherrif’s Office in Ohio said they were notified by a family member that Matthew had arrived at their home, which is where he was arrested.

An extradition hearing for Dolan was held in Ohio on Wednesday. 

Geauga County Sheriff Scott Hildenbrand said his office is working closely with the Pender County Sheriff’s Office to return Matthew to North Carolina. 

“Two of their detectives are up here right now. We called our local bureau of criminal investigations down,” Hildenbrand said. “We’re helping out the sheriff’s office and their detectives, and hopefully they’ll be brining him home in the next couple days.”   

While Matthew awaits extradition, the district attorney’s office has not yet brought official charges against him.

UNCW also confirmed that Matthew was a student at the university. He graduated in May. His sister Megan also just graduated in May from Appalachian State. 

A Gofundme has been started by a family member in Megan’s name to cover funeral costs.
