Pender County manager gives presentation about new property appraisals during Burgaw BOC meeting

BURGAW, NC (WWAY) — If you live in Pender County, you may be facing major changes to your taxes this year.

For the first time in 7 years, the county will be going through a property reappraisal.

Like what New Hanover County did last year, the values of properties throughout Pender County will be reviewed and updated.

A presentation about the reappraisal was given during the Burgaw Board of Commissioners meeting on Tuesday.

Pender County Manager Colby Sawyer said residents need to be prepared for any possible changes to the county tax rate.

“We’re doing that across the county, almost 55,000 properties in the county so quite a bit of quality control to do there,” Sawyer said. “But part of the budget process is setting a tax rate. Taxes are of course how we fund those, those government services. And we can’t set the tax rate if we don’t know the value.”

For reference, New Hanover County reduced it’s tax rate, due to the overall increase in property values.

Sawyer said the changes in value will be mailed out by the end of March.

Some more presentations about the appraisal will be held at other meetings, including Topsail Beach on Wednesday, Surf City next Thursday and community meetings at the Penderlea Auditorium on February 24th and Pender County Hampstead Annex on March 13th.
