BURGAW, NC (WWAY) — Pender County Schools says it has earned high marks from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction for academic performance and graduation rates during the 2023-24 school year.

Several schools in the district were honored for achieving or exceeding expected academic growth, while the district as a whole was recognized for its outstanding graduation rate, cementing its place as a top performer in the state.

The district’s graduation rate of 92.7% ranked it among the top 10 school districts in North Carolina. Pender Early College led the way, joining the prestigious 100% Graduation Rate Club. Topsail High School followed closely with a 96.2% graduation rate, earning its place in the 95%+ Graduation Rate Club.

In academic growth, schools across the district demonstrated exceptional progress, reflecting the dedication and hard work of students, educators, and staff. Schools that exceeded their academic growth goals include Cape Fear Elementary, Cape Fear Middle, Heide Trask High School, North Topsail Elementary, Rocky Point Elementary, South Topsail Elementary, Surf City Middle, and Topsail High School.

Pender Early College, Topsail Annandale Elementary, and Surf City Elementary were recognized for achieving expected academic growth under the state accountability system.

West Pender Middle School, which also achieved expected academic growth, did so despite being designated a low-performing school by the state.

“These awards highlight the dedication of our students and educators,” said Dr. Brad Breedlove, Superintendent of Pender County Schools. “The collective efforts across the district exemplify our commitment to academic excellence and continuous improvement.”
