Pender County Schools implements clear bag policy for high school events

BURGAW, NC (WWAY) — Beginning this school year, Pender County Schools (PCS) will implement Clear Bag Policy 5021 for all major events held on the campuses of PCS high schools, including football and basketball games.
The policy was approved during the August 12, 2025 Board of Education meeting as part of the district’s ongoing efforts to enhance safety and streamline entry into large events. Except for approved exceptions, all bags brought into these events must be either:
- Clear plastic or vinyl bags not exceeding 12” x 6” x 12” in size
- Clear plastic freezer/sandwich bags (gallon-size or smaller)
Attendees carrying bags that do not meet these guidelines will be denied entry and asked to return the bag to their vehicle or another off-campus location before entering.
Approved exceptions — which do not need to be clear but will be subject to inspection at the entrance — include:
- Small clutch bags no larger than 4.5” x 6.5” (about the size of a hand), with or without a handle or strap
- Medically necessary items
- Diaper bags when accompanied by an infant or toddler
“This policy mirrors safety measures already in place at many universities and professional sports venues,” said Matt Davis, County Athletic Director. “It’s a proactive step to ensure our students, families, and fans can enjoy events in a safe environment.”
