Pender County Schools to implement metal detectors at sporting events

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Administrators hope sporting events at public schools will be much safer, with the use of new metal detectors.

In January, the county received a $200,000 school safety grant from the Division of Public Instruction’s Center for Safer Schools.

Part of the grant will cover the cost of metal detectors, which will be used for sports throughout the county.

A spokesman for Pender County said while the detectors are portable, there is currently no plan to use them at the entrances to school buildings.
