People are keeping their faith while still in shelters

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — As the water begins to rise in parts of Fair Bluff, residents are thinking about what they can do next.

The Red Cross set up a shelter at West Columbus High School while they figure out what they’re going to do next. Dozens of people are at the shelter as the neighborhoods they used to live in still look like lakes. The water is even waist deep in some parts of the area.

But while life as they know it is gone, most people we talked to are keeping their heads high. One woman, Rachel McGirt, is not only dealing with flooding in her home, she left Lumberton to go seek shelter in Fair Bluff at her daughters house, but that is gone now too. On top of it all, McGirt is battling stage three breast cancer, but she’s not letting all of this get her down.

“I’m holding up good actually, because I’m in church and I’m in the Lord’s hands so I’m holding up good,” said McGirt.

The Red Cross is getting help from people within the shelter as well. Some have stepped up to help with meals and anywhere else help is needed. Even with nothing, people are giving what they can.
