Traveling Gulf War exhibit to be created

RALEIGH, NC (AP) – North Carolina is finally going to use $100,000 donated by the Kuwaiti government to help build something to honor the state’s Persian Gulf War veterans and those who died in the conflict.

Gov. Pat McCrory announced Friday the donation would go to the state Museum of History to create a traveling exhibit about North Carolina’s role in the war, which began 25 years ago this weekend. The exhibit could be completed by late summer.

McCrory says 75,000 service members from North Carolina installations served during the war. He read the names of 17 North Carolina residents who died in the war and contained in a proclamation recognizing the 25th anniversary.

The Kuwaiti government made the donation in 1996. Plans for a permanent memorial failed and the money was largely forgotten.
