Person with gun prompts lockdown at North Carolina college

WINSTON-SALEM, NC (AP) — A person with a gun prompted a lockdown at a central North Carolina college, although it is not believed any shots were fired.

Winston-Salem State University spokesman Aaron Singleton said campus police were notified around 9:30 p.m. Monday that an “interaction” in a student activities center led to a person displaying a gun. The campus was put on lockdown just after 9:45 p.m. as police searched for the suspect, who fled the area.

Singleton says there is no indication shots were fired. There were no reports of injuries.

A campus-wide crime alert said officers had surveyed WSSU and found no ongoing threat, but students were urged to exercise caution during the overnight hours. No one is in custody.

The lockdown was lifted just after 1 a.m.
