LELAND, N.C. (WWAY) — Hoggard and Laney might come to mind as area football powerhouses, but North Brunswick is right there with them as programs with four consecutive winning seasons.

The Scorpions will have ten returning starters, including eight on the offense alone. Their 21 seniors is also among the most for any team in the area.

Conference realignment this year doesn’t affect the Carolina Coast schools very much. North Brunswick will still play nearly all the clubs they’ve grown used to.

Head Coach Bryan Davis recognizes that as they look to take a step forward and win their first conference title since 2004.

“It’s the same thing,” Davis said. “We’re playing against some schools that are bigger, but it is what it is. We’ve been like that since I’ve been here. The basics of football. Don’t turn the ball over. Make sure you tackle and limit the big plays. You’re going to have to execute against some of these teams that are really well coached. They got a lot of depth. A lot of experience in a lot of spots. You’re going to have to execute really well.”

Davis is entering his eighth year at the helm, making him the second longest active tenured head coach in the conference.

As practices continue, the players hope to shore up the small things.

“These practices early in the season, we’re mainly going to be focusing on fixing the fine little details,” senior wide receiver Dytrick Whiters said. “I think a lot during practice, we are mandating the small principles. We’re hoping to iron out miscommunications like little missteps, wrong reads, wrong blocks.”

The Scorpions won a pair of playoff games last season, but are driven to advance even further.

“Last year, we ended up 5-5 in the regular season, but we go up against a lot of schools that are bigger than us,” senior quarterback Jonah Campbell said. “Now we’re in a 6, 7, 8A conference. So conference play is tough for us. I truly believe that every week and every game that we go into, we expect to win and we expect to execute at a high level.”
