Pill drop off this weekend

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Happening this weekend, the law enforcement community is teaming up with New Hanover Regional Medical Center at the Medical Mall on 17th Street to try and get people to safely dispose of prescription drugs.

District Attorney Ben David said this event helps keep drugs from falling onto the wrong hands or from polluting the water supply if they are disposed of incorrectly.

“It’s not the 70 year olds with the bad backs that I’m worried about, it’s their grandchildren. And a lot of times these pills are falling into the wrong hands,” said David.

David said these events are very successful all across our area.

“In fact, I’m pretty competitive with my brother who’s the DA across the river and I understand that Brunswick county actually led the state one year out of 100 counties in the number of pills that were ultimately safely disposed of through a drop like this. I want to win this year. So I’m asking New Hanover and Pender county residents to safely dispose of their pills in this fashion,” David said.

The event runs from 9:00 a.m. through 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
