Pokemon Go app gets a lot of attention

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A new game for your smart phone is getting a lot of attention. It’s called Pokemon Go. The Nintendo-owned franchise first became popular in the late 1990s, now everyone is suddenly catching Pokemon fever again.

“My Facebook feed is nothing but Pokemon Go posts so I said I got to see what this is all about,” Cape Fear Games Manager Andrew Westin.

He’s not the only one who is interested in this recently released app.

“It’s kind of the only thing we have been talking about in the back for a few days,” Cape Fear Games employee Troy Coleman said. “It’s kind of getting out of hand.”

They say they know how much attention this game is getting because people come in nearly every day to play.

“Swipe a couple times, it will vibrate when a Pokemon appears, and then if you have a poke ball you can throw it at the monster and capture it,” Westin said.

Through your smart phone’s GPS, clock, and camera, the game gives you a virtual experience with the popular Pokemon who appears throughout the real world.

The big question is why is this growing in popularity so quickly?

“I think the craze of Pokemon Go is because it hits such a wide age range of people,” Coleman said. “The big thing is that while it is an app game you’re not sitting at your computer playing it all day. You actually have to get up and go and walk around to actually experience the game.”

“I’m not entirely sure,” Westin said. “It’s some kind of phenomenon or craze. People are able to work together in team but it’s also a way to get exercise and get around town to see different places.”

While some maybe into the game more so than others, people who never played Pokemon before are even trying it out.

“I open it once every hour just to see what’s going on so I’m only level seven while others in the backroom are on level 13 and the game has only been out since Thursday so that means they’ve pretty much been playing it nonstop,” Coleman said.

Although, the app can be a distraction while driving and some security issues have occurred since the release.  Coleman says he doesn’t go anywhere he’s not familiar with.

“Whenever you open up the app is says stay aware of your surroundings, some people have been a little foolish with it,” Coleman said. “I hear reports of someone in Chicago being stabbed for his iPhone and some people playing in their cars so you really have to be safe with it.”

According to Forbes.com, Pokemon Go is close to surpassing Twitter in daily active users on android devices and it’s currently only officially available in the US, New Zealand, and Australia.
