Polar Plunge returns to Kure Beach to benefit Special Olympics New Hanover County

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The 22nd annual Polar Plunge is scheduled starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday February 21, 2026, at the Kure Beach Pavilion. The fundraising goal is $150,000 to help keep the program strong. Special Olympics is run completely off of donations and corporate fundraising.

Special Olympics New Hanover County provides year-round sports training in 27 sports, local and regional invitational competitions, social events, recreation activities, and more to children and adults with intellectual disabilities. More than 1,000 athletes participate, and 500 volunteers and coaches support to offer these programs at no cost to the athletes or their families

All the funds raised stay local in this county and 100% of funds raised go towards programming costs. And help pay for our 27 sports and programs, 2 county wide sport days, 5 dances a year, social and holiday events, monthly movie nights, local/regional/statewide/national competitions, and all competition costs and more!

  • 11am- raffle and auction open
  • 12:50pm raffle/auction closes
  • 12:55pm- 1 mile walk
  • 1:35pm- 5k
  • 3pm- plunge
