Police: Beware of Duke Energy scam

WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) — The Whiteville Police Department are warning residents to beware of a potential scam.

Police said several residents received a call from imposters who claimed they were Duke Energy. Investigators said the scammers told residents if they didn’t pay their light bill immediately; their power would be turned off.

Investigators said the suspects seemed to have Middle Eastern accents and that they they claimed to be from the main office in Greensboro.

Police said the suspects are telling victims to go to Food Lion and get a prepaid card. Then, the scammers tell the victim to call in the card number so they can get the money.

The Whiteville Police are asking residents to call Duke Energy themselves and do not send any cash and to pay your bill by method you normally pay.
