Police coverage in Navassa is on the agenda as town works on solution
NAVASSA, NC (WWAY) — The town of Navassa held an agenda meeting Mondy evening and one of the topics was about the police department.
We’ve reported before that the town has been without a police department, and the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office has been patrolling the area.
Currently the sheriff department’s lawyer and the town’s lawyer are meeting. The council is working to get dedicated officers from the county and hopes to have a decision whether they accept or decline the offer by the next council meeting.
Ernest Mooring Jr says there has always been law enforcement coverage.
“We always had coverage here, it just wasn’t dedicated coverage. But we always made sure that we had coverage regardless from the county in spite of our situation. We have growing pains here so we just gotta deal with it,” Mooring Jr. said.
The next council meeting is scheduled for September 18th at 7:30 pm.
