Police: Man tries to run officer over with stolen truck
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Police say a man is facing several charges after he tried to run over an officer with a stolen truck, sending them on a chase early Friday before ditching the vehicle.
Wilmington Police say it all started at 12:30 a.m. in the 2900 block of Market Street when officers got a call in reference to a trespassing complaint. That’s where officer say when they got to the scene they spotted a man in a blue truck, who then quickly threw the truck in reverse.
Police say the man, later identified as Saquan Montrel Lyons, 21, then started going forward in an attempt to run over officers. They say Lyons continued driving on Market Street at high speeds as police tried to catch up with him, and later lost sight of the truck.
Officers later found the truck parked and abandoned in the 700 block of S. 15th Street, where they called in K-9 units to track Lyons down. That search led them to the 1300 block of Queen Street, where officers say they found both Lyons and his passenger.
Police say Lyons is charged with assault on a government official, fleeing to elude arrest, possession of a stolen auto, resisting and delaying officers and driving with a revoked license. Lyons is in the New Hanover County Jail under $20,000 secured bond.
