Police release names of people killed in Thursday night Market Street shooting

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wilmington Police Department has released the names of two people killed in a shooting Thursday night.

21-year-old Taemon Kirby of Wilmington and 22-year-old Niyja Spain of Brunswick County died from injuries sustained in the shooting.

Police say two people were meeting with two other males for a transaction that was taking place inside of a vehicle. After a brief conversation inside of the car, a gun was discharged from the backseat into the front of the vehicle, striking the front passenger. Two men quickly exited the vehicle and one of those men fired his weapon into the vehicle in the direction of where the initial gunshots came from. One of the rear passengers was struck multiple times. 

Detectives are continuing to examine evidence and put information together. This is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the WPD at (910) 343-3609 or by using the Tip 411 app.
