Poplar Grove Sanctuary gives animals a second chance

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — There are about 105 animals who call Poplar Grove home. Since 2013, the Poplar Grove Animal Sanctuary has been a place where animals can go to turn their lives around.

The Sanctuary takes anything from goats and horses to chickens and rabbits. Kitty Worthington, the Sanctuary’s director, said each and every animal that comes in is like a child to her.

“I went from high heels to boots. I was in the corporate world and decided I’d had enough of that, so when I came into this and saw the need … The rewards are ten times over. Every time you see this emaciated animal come in here, and when they leave they’re beautiful,” said Worthington.

Not every animal is adopted out, and if they aren’t they will live out the rest of their lives in the comfort of Poplar Grove.

The animals come in from Animal Control Departments in three counties, Brunswick, Pender, and New Hanover.

All animals are welcome, no matter their condition.

“Any animal that’s in need. If it gets here and we determine it might be more than we can handle then we will call in the necessary medical assistance that we may need,” said Worthington

Worthington said every live her and the volunteers at the Sanctuary save is a blessing and every loss is devastating. She said with community support they will be able to keep saving animals for years to come.

Right now the Sanctuary is open on Wednesdays, but Worthington said she is hoping to be open full time starting in May. People are able to come out to the farm and meet and pet the animals. There are also volunteer opportunities to help rehabilitate some of the critters. For more information: Click Here
