Port City’s own UFC champion Derek Brunson shares love of MMA and new gym


WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington’s own Derek Brunson stopped by the WWAY News studios tonight to talk with WWAY Evening Anchor Amanda Fitzpatrick.

Brunson, who is a recognized nationwide as a heavy contender and UFC fighter grew up in Wilmington and even attended Hoggard High School. It’s there he was also known as a standout athlete and wrestler.

Now he is setting his sights on his own gym, where he plans to train other fighters and even offer classes for those interested in getting the fighter body.

Brunson, is hosting a grand re-opening of his new gym inside Independence mall Saturday, May 12th from 9 a.m. -1:30 p.m. at 3500 Oleander Drive in Wilmington.

Now the next fight, after compiling a five-fight winning streak, Antonio Carlos Junior wanted a shot at the middleweight elite. At UFC 227 on August 4, “Cara de Sapato” gets his chance when he faces No. 7-ranked Derek Brunson at Staples Center in Los Angeles.
