Port strike across the east coast could have sweeping economic impact

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A massive potential strike of thousands of dockworkers could affect ports across the east coast next week, including the Port of Wilmington
Negotiations between the union representing dock workers—the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA)—and the organization representing terminal operators—the US Maritime Alliance (USMX)—have come to a standstill.
Thursday USMX filed a charge with the National Labor Relations Board saying ILA is refusing to negotiate.
If ILA workers do go on strike on the east coast, including at the Port of Wilmington, it could have sweeping impacts on the US economy.
A potential strike is expected to begin October 1. The last time dock workers on the east coast went on strike was in 1977.
WWAY reached out to ILA, but we have not received a response as of Thursday evening.
